Course in Oil Spill Response Operations (OPS)

The Course in Oil Spill Response Operations is designed for people involved in the practical aspects of oil spill response. It is suitable for people with a hands-on approach at oil facilities and marine terminals..

Attendees
Personnel from government and industry who could be involved in practical response activities.

Entry Requirements
Successful completion of the AMOSC online learning prior to attendance.

Course Aim
To train and qualify personnel for employment as oil spill operators.

Learning Outcomes (i)

  1. Identify, inspect, prepare and operate oil spill response equipment
  2. Deploy equipment as outlined in the incident action plan
  3. Ensure equipment is operational and ready for emergency use
  4. Liaise with incident control centre to assess and plan layout of an oil spill response incident site. including staging area, temporary storage and removal of recovered oil spill waste
  5. Ensure outcomes identified in an incident action plan are met by the work team

Vocational Outcomes
Contribute as a member of an emergency response team attending to an oil spill with particular responsibility for the coordination of the incident site and staging area and the management of equipment and waste.


Course Content and Qualification
This training achieves the following national units of competency (ii) PMAOSHS211B Prepare equipment for emergency response.

  • Hazards and risks
  • OHS documents and procedures
  • Site assessment, planning and operations (including identifying resources)
  • On-site waste planning including; temporary storage, secondary contamination, and transportation
  • Marine and shoreline equipment including; boom identification, boom deployment, operation, fault detecting, skimmer identification, and skimmer deployment, operation and fault detecting
  • Tracking equipment
  • Equipment contracts
  • Maintaining records on site
  • Demobilising an oil spill site
  • Communicating with others including briefing on work plan


i The learning outcomes on this course also cover those gained on the Course in An Introduction to Oil Spills.
ii The AMOSC suite of courses is currently submitted to the ACT accreditation council for review and approval.
