"RENA" Grounded on Astrolabe Reef New Zealand

The fully loaded container ship caused the worst environmental disaster in New Zealand's history. Maritime New Zealand in preparing for the 'worst case scenario' asked AMSA for assistance. Along with Oil Pollution Clean-up Equipment, three of AMOSC's experienced staff, Nick Quinn-Manager Operations & Response, Dale Jolly-Senior Technical Officer and Jessica Smith-Technical Officer/Marine Scientist were deployed to assist.

Nick was deployed as the National On-Scene Commander (NOSC) in a rotating roster with two other personnel.  Nick’s key oil spill response experience comes from : Global Peace, bulk carrier involved in a collision and subsequent oil spill in the port of Gladstone, Queensland, 2006; Hazardous substances spill (spiller unknown) near the Poor Knights Islands, 2005; Pasha Bulker, bulk carrier grounded in Newcastle, New South Wales, 2007; Tui oil field spill, 25 tonnes, New Plymouth, 2008; Forum Samoa, vessel grounding in Apia Harbour, Samoa, 2010; Deepwater Horizon, well blowout and subsequent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, 2010.

Dale was deployed as the Operations officer in charge of the Marine Unit.  Dale was chosen because of his vast knowledge and experience in using AMOSC’s oil spill equipment.  His key oil spill response experience comes from Pasha Bulker, bulk carrier grounded in Newcastle, New South Wales, 2007; Pacific Adventurer, HFO lost from 185 metre container ship east of Cape Moreton 2009; Montara, well blowout and subsequent oil spill located 140 nautical Miles offshore from the Northwest Australian coast, 2009; Shen Neng 1, Bulk carrier ran aground off the central Queensland Coast 2010.

Jessica was deployed as an Environmental Advisor to work within the Planning Unit in the Incident Command Centre. Jessica’s primary responsibilities included the development of a Monitoring Plan, establishing beach opening criteria’s and contaminated seafood assessment guidelines. Jessica was also involved in beach water quality testing and fluorometry, as well as establishing a database for use by the Oiled Wildlife Centre for managing their intakes and releases.
